Auto Field Maps

Draw around your land and every field is found, measured and numbered for you. Download it as a map, a spreadsheet or for Google Earth.

Find your land on the map, then draw around it.

1Find your land

2Draw around your land

Click around the edge of your land on the map, then click the first point again (or press Finish). Drag the corners afterwards to adjust it. You can draw more than one area.

    +Your own aerial photo (optional)

Use a newer or sharper picture of your land than the satellite one: a straight-down drone photo, an aerial photo or a mapping file (GeoTIFF). A mapping file places itself. A photo starts in the middle of the map: drag it roughly into place, then press Line it up and it is matched to the hedges and field edges on the map. Your photo is then used to find the fields, and appears in your downloads. It stays on your device.

    3Map your fields

This takes a little longer: the lidar for your land is fetched and read.

Only available once your land is drawn.

Fences don't show up on maps, photos or lidar. Mark any fences that split a field (below) first, or that field is measured as one.

Draw fields, hedges and fences by hand

A field you draw gets its size straight away. Hedges, fences, walls, tracks and streams you draw are used as field edges the next time you press Auto map fields. Tap any field or line on the map to change its corners, number or delete it.

The PDF has your map on the first page and a list of every field, with its number and size, on the second. The spreadsheet opens in Excel or Google Sheets.

          About Auto Field Maps

Auto Field Maps finds the fields on your land for you: it reads the hedges, fences, walls, tracks and streams already on OpenStreetMap, the hedges and changes of crop colour in the aerial photo, and (at the most accurate setting) the hedges, walls and banks that stand up in the Environment Agency's lidar. In England each field is labelled with its Rural Payments Agency field number.

Sizes are measured on the map, so they can differ a little from your official records. Check anything that matters against the Rural Payments service.

It is free and works in your web browser. Your work is kept in your browser and is never sent to us.
